broadcast journalism

Kickin’ It Live (WARL) is the broadcast news for Upper Arlington High School. While Kickin’ It Live and Arlingtonian remain separate classes and students, I have made it a priority this year to collaborate with them.

Kickin’ It Live airs every Friday morning, and our entire school is required to tune in. Arlingtonian issues are distributed on Fridays during the lunch periods, and Kickin’ It Live includes a teaser segment each time we distribute. In our 3rd issue of the year, Arlingtonian advisor Robin Mollica was featured on Kickin’ It Live.

Last spring, the Kickin’ It Live and Arlingtonian staff took a journalism trip to New York City for four days. While in New York, both staff got to experience how professional media environments operated. Throughout the trip, we observed The Today Show broadcast and toured NBC Studios, learning how anchors and crews collaborate together and produce timely and accurate news under strict deadlines. We also experienced an NBC Studio Tour and attended the Museum of the Moving Image workshop, where we learned the role of visuals and audience engagement in broadcast journalism.

After observing The Today Show broadcast, I got to talk with Dylan Dreyer and hand her a copy of Arlingtonians latest issue.

While my main leadership role remains within print journalism, observing broadcast journalism strengthened my ability to think cross-platform as an editor. I returned with a better understanding of how scripts, visuals, and timing impact storytelling.

Throughout high school, my schedule did not allow me to take the prerequisites required for Kickin’ It Live. However, on Arlingtonian staff this year, we have a writer who is in both classes. I frequently check in with them on what stories Kickin’ It Live is airing, as well as keep in close touch with the main anchors of the show.
